Our blood ties sketched in musical scenes on our land. So recognizable...
During Lab Molke nine theatre makers help out on Frisian dairy farms. They muck out the stables or help with milking. While working they share stories with the dairy farmers and their families. Later they transform their experiences to create dramatic scenes and music that we perform outside in the fields. Using theatre and music we attempt to express these farmers’ guarded, innermost emotions.
The abolition of the Dutch milk quota on 1 April 2015 means the price of milk is now determined by world market supply and demand. Expectations are that this will lead to ever higher production by fewer businesses. Many family-owned dairy farms that can trace their heritage back for generations will disappear in the near future. What is the social impact of such a political decision? How do different generations of Frisian dairy farmers cope with modern day demands?
This research project is part of De Reis (The journey), a community art programme undertaken by LAB LWD for the Kulturele Haadstêd 2018. Artists and theatre makers address topical issues that play a role in the Frisian community now and in the future. Talented makers gain experience by working in master-apprentice projects like that of Lab Molke.
